According to a controversial Sudanese census conducted in 2008 shortly before the independence of the South Sudan, Western Bahr El Ghazal State was the least populous state in South Sudan. It is inhabited by three main ethnic groups: Bantu Sudani groups locally referred to as Fertit, Lou and Dinka. Among these groups the Bantu groups and the Lou are the largest while Dinka form a minority. With exception of Bantu groups which mainly practice subsidiary farming, the other groups Lou and Dinka combined cattle rearing and agriculture. Concerning climate the states have a high rain fall about seven months in a year from May to November. It begins with poor savannah and ground water surface to the north then grass land and trees south and the rain increase to Equator area which is equator climate.
