Introduction:

University of Bahrl El-Ghazal is one of the five established public institution of learning in the Republic of South Sudan. It worth mentioning that the establishment of the universities did not occur synchronously, but at different times. University of Juba the oldest among them all was established in 1975/1976, while Bahr El-Ghazal and Upper Nile Universities were simultaneously established in1991. Rumbek University got off the ground in 2008 and Dr John Garang Memorial University 2009.

Background

University of Bahr El-Ghazal was established in February 1991. The objective in the University Act says “To train manpower for Development need in South Sudan” it envisage the development of skilled Manpower to seek and determine rational methods of exploiting the vast potential natural resoucesthat could be geared towards the improvement of the lives of citizens within the context of national goal for rapid development.

Upon its inception (UBG)

  • College of Education was its first born whose cradle home became Wau (1991).
  • College of Medicine (1993/94) and College of Veterinary sciences (1993/94) were open in Khartoum 1998 for the obvious reasons that the faculties (equipment, teaching staff… etc)for running the two science based colleges were non-obtainable in Wau, in addition to grave insecurity which made the availability of required sin-quo-on difficult, if not impossible at that time.
  • College of Economics and Social Studies in 2003
  • Institute of Public and Environmental Health 2003
  • Institute of Strategic Studies was established in Khartoum 2004
  • Graduate College was established in Khartoum offering Postgraduate ranging from post-diplomas, MA/MSc and PhD.
  • Intermediate Diploma Programs attached to College of Economics in 2016
  • Computer Center was established for training purposes for both Academic Staff and Students
  • College of Agriculture touched ground in 2019.
